Cannabis consumption has always had a sharing culture. People standing or sitting in a circle passing a joint around That 70s Show style is virtually synonymous with marijuana. But while the puff puff pass mentality holds strong with joints and bongs, the vape pen feels a little more personal.

Do People Expect You to Share Your Vape Pen?

Sharing is often seen as common courtesy when smoking cannabis. But this doesn’t seem to extend as much to a vape pen. It may be as simple as that a cannabis vape pen is cleaner than a joint. 

There’s definitely a more healthy and sanitary appeal to a cannabis vape pen. Vaping is more lung-healthy than smoking, and the stainless steel is more germ-resistant than rolling papers.

The most common reason people cite for sharing their vape pen is for people who are curious about getting their own. Most people will only share vape pens with their family or close friends.

Another reason many people don’t like to share their vape is their custom settings. Smoking cannabis is more of a one-size-fits-all experience. There are no settings on a joint, the user just decides how long of a drag to take.

With a vape pen, however, user settings determine everything from the temperature to the draw length. Sharing your vaporizer with others puts those settings in risk to be tampered with, which can affect your own experience.

The easiest and simplest way to reduce risk is with alcohol or medical wipes. Simply use a wipe on the mouthpiece after someone else uses it.

If you’re worried about offending the other person, also wipe the mouthpiece off before handing it to them shows that it’s a normal action and not a concern over their personal hygiene.

If you’re concerned about sharing your vape pen, the mouthpiece is the most likely place to spread germs. In addition to using wipes, the material of the mouthpiece can help provide further protection.
